INEC Shifts Election by Six Weeks

February 7, 2015 – Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega today said the February 14 general election has been postponed for another six weeks.

He said position reached after carefully weighing its position after meeting with relevant stakeholders, political parties, interest groups and securities.

“INEC relies on security agencies to provide security for people. Where security adversary becomes otherwise, it becomes unconscionable for INEC to call people out on elections”, he said.

The commission is concerned about security of adhoc staff which include NYSC members who constitute over 600 people.

“If security of voters cannot be guaranteed, then free and fair elections cannot be guaranteed”, he said.

Presidential election will now hold, March 28, 2015, State Governorship election will hold April 11, 2015.
