Washington, Oct 28, 2016 – The Nigerian Government has not approached the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for any financial assistance, the financial institution has said.
The IMF made the revelation during a press briefing in the United States.
Speaking at the occasion, Gerry Rice of the IMF’s Communications Department the Nigerian government has not approached it for funds even in this period of recession.
“Nigeria is — well, they’re different obviously. But with Nigeria we’ve had normal consultations, the Article IV discussions and so on, and we are engaged with the Nigerian authorities; however, no request for financial assistance.
“I say that to contrast with Venezuela, where again, you probably know we have had no consultation and active engagement there for quite some time, so it’s a very different situation.
“We would welcome the authorities’ reengagement with the Fund, including having an Article IV, but that is not the case. So it makes it much more difficult for us to assess the situation in Venezuela relative to Nigeria”, he said.
