LAGOS, Nigeria – The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has given approval to the National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) to commence independent audit of police detention cells in police formations including those of the Special Anti-Robbery Squard(SARS) across the federation.




In a statement, ACP Abayomi Shogunle of the Police Complaint Rapid Response Unit(PCRRU), said the visit will enable the NHRC to oversee the human rights situation of detainees as well as undertake a general audit of all police detention cells in Nigeria.

He said the exercise is part of 2018 NHRC audit of police detention centres in Nigeria. The NHRC was established by an Act of Parliament in 1995 to deal with matters relating to promotion, protection and enforcement of human rights in Nigeria.

He said the Police Complaint Rapid Response Unit(PCRRU) is available 24/7 to receive complaint from members of the public on police misconduct via sms 0805 700 0001, 0805 700 0002, and on Whatsapp 0805 700 0003. It can also be reached on emails policepcrru@gmail.com.
