Jonathan who was speaking at a GEJ Meet Nigerian Professionals in Nigeria and in the Diaspora put together by former Nigeria’s skipper and most valuable player, Austain Jay Jay Okocha in Abuja said he has heard about professional athletes and footballers who have served Nigeria and are aged with nothing to take care of themselves.

He said he has heard of footballers who were injured on the pitch of play without funds to attend to their needs adding that he has also heard of professional athletes who are need of funds to train abroad  in such a way that they can win laurels for Nigeria but are not able to do that due to lack of funds.

He said he has also heard about sportsmen who are sick and were not able to take care of their medical needs.

The President said the special fund for sportsmen will take care of these needs so that they are able represent Nigeria without any regrets later on when they are aged.
