A student has launched a high-stakes legal battle after being branded a rapist in a viral social media post he claims has “destroyed” his life.
David Ojuko Adefesobi has hit back at his accuser with a demand for N15 million (approx. £6,500) in damages, claiming a “malicious” campaign on WhatsApp and other platforms turned him into a public pariah overnight.
Lawyers for Mr. David say the nightmare began on February 17, when his name and private phone number were circulated alongside “entirely false” allegations of sexual assault.
The fallout was instant. His legal team, K.C. Anekwe & Associates, say their client was bombarded with:
Death threats and harassment from strangers.
Public ridicule among family and colleagues.
”Significant emotional distress” and lost business deals.
In a stinging letter fired off to Adewale Adeola Adeife—a student at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria—lawyers argued that while a video apology was previously posted, it simply wasn’t enough to mop up the mess.
”The damage remains substantial and ongoing,” the firm stated. “An apology does not extinguish liability for defamation nor adequately remedy the injury caused.”
The “without prejudice” legal notice gives the accused 14 days to meet a strict list of demands or face a full-blown court battle:
CASH: A N15,000,000 payout for damages.
RETRACTION: A formal written apology pinned to every platform where the slurs appeared.
DELETE: Immediate removal of all defamatory posts.
SILENCE: A signed “cease and desist” undertaking to never repeat the claims.
If the clock runs out without a settlement, David’s team vows to seek “exemplary damages” and an injunction in court.
