Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists,(NUJ), Lagos State chapter, Mr. Deji Elumoye at the weekend explained how he managed to escape being robbed by armed robbers at one of the Automatic Teller Machine(ATM) in Lagos.

The chairman who was addressing journalists at the monthly NUJ congress in Lagos said he had branched off at one of the ATMs to withdraw N20,000 at about 8PM after close of work, when he found a stationery vehicle in the premises of the bank.

“As soon as we moved from the bank, the vehicle moved, and started trailing us. When I discovered this I ordered my driver to drive into a crowded area”, he explained adding that as soon as his driver drove into the crowded area, his assailants came out looking quite disappointed before driving away from the scene.

Elumoye called on journalists to avoid patronizing ATM late in the evening and very early in the morning, stressing that armed robbers strike during these period. He said that the Deputy Editor of Saturday Newswatch, Mr. Toyin Obadina that was killed was trailed from the bank where he had gone to withdraw money after closing late from office.

He warned journalists to be security conscious when driving and take care to even drive out of their way to be sure that a trailing vehicle is not actually after them and try as much as possible to drive into areas that would be virtually impossible for any assailant to strike.
