AWKA, Nigeria – The coordinator of Anambra State National Youth Service Corps NYSC Mrs Blessing Ekene Iruma on Friday cried out to the state governor Prof Charles Soludo to urgently intervene on gully erosion menace ravaging the state NYSC orientation camp.
She made the statement during the swearing – in ceremony of 2023 Batch B’ stream one orientation course held at Nnamdi Azikiwe NYSC Unity Permanent Orientation Camp Umuawulu/Mbaukwu Awka South local government council of Anambra State.
According to her,the errosion menace is seriously hindering the smooth operations of the camp, depleting the agency resources.
She said errosion had eaten up most of landscape and now pulling down walls and structure in the camp.
” We also appeal to the Anambra State Government to speedily intervene in the erosion menace currently threatening the structures of the orientation camp” she lamented.
She also disclosed that the erosion has pulled down some structure and she had just bought about 10 trips of sand and stones to build barriers on camp to check flow of water.
” The erosion has pulled down some fences and I bought 10 trips of sand and stones to fill some areas. If nothing is urgently done ,the errosion will destroy beautiful structure put in place by state government” she stated.
Iruma also disclosed that at the close of registration midnight, Thursday a total of 1,610 Corps Members, comprising of 702 males and 908 registered.
According to her, the Corps members are responding and participating in the various activities on camp and they have shown enough disciplined which are helpful to the running of the day to day activities of the Camp.
Reacting,Governor Charles Soludo represented by his chief of staff Mr Ernest Ezeajughi at the swearing in said that the government will liase with the coordinator to find out lasting solution to the errosion menace in the camp.
According to Soludo, Anambra state has over 1000 errosion and it is eating deep in the state resources.
“We will have our hands full in erosion but we will do something. We will discuss with the coordinator and meet with the commissioner incharge of environment to do something. We will certainly do something” he said .
