IKOT EKPENE, Akwa Ibom, Nigeria – Former senate majority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio today decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) to the All Progressive Congress(APC). He decamped with about two members of the House of Representatives and some members of the State House of Assembly, some serving Commissioners, former commissioners, PDP deputy Chairman among others.
At the event were speaker of Lagos House of Assembly, Mr. Mudasiru Obasa, Chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Bos Mustapha, who representd Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.
Speaking at the event, Akpabio said people are asking why he has chosen APC, but that he did it because he is a nationalist. He explained that when a country is at war, the best thing to do is to join hands to win the war.
“We must join our hands to salvage Nigeria”, he said, adding that there are insurgents all over the place and that in a period of national emergency everybody should put hands together to bring about peace.
To those who call him a conspirator, he said, “I will like to be a conspriator who join hands to bring peace to Akwa Ibom, I will like to be a constipirator who bring food to my people, this is uncommon change, uncomon change has come to Akwa Ibom”, he said.
He said he joined the party not because “they put gun on my head”. According to him, a young man wrote a pettition to EFFC but that today , he has not been charged to court because noting was found in the petition.
He said, he shares a passion with Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu to develop the centre and the south south, adding that Akwa Ibom cannot stand alone. “South south should also partake in the sharing of that resources. After consulting, I went to Prof Osinbajo and later I flew to London, where I met with President Muhammadu Buhari…. I want to confirm to you that what I have done today is to take the south south to the centre, to take Akwa Ibom to the centre”, he said.
“As I speak to you now members of the national assembly are here they have all decamped”, he said, adding that Ben Bruce won the contract for Tropicana. I am a man of peace, Ican’t be a terrorist, I joined the APC for national interest”, he said, adding that he resigned as Minority Leader of the party because PDP is rewarding “people who destroyed the party”, he said.
