ONITSHA, Anambra – Telecommunications giant Globacom has announced the renewal of its principal sponsorship for the 2025 Ofala Festival, a revered annual cultural ceremony performed by His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, in Anambra State, Nigeria.
The announcement was made during a press briefing held on Thursday by the Ofala Festival Organising Committee at the Obi’s Palace in Onitsha.
The festival, which Globacom has consistently supported since 2011, will run for two days: the Iru Ofala on October 17, followed by the Azu Ofala on October 18.
Culture as an Economic Engine
Globacom underscored that its commitment to the Ofala Festival is rooted in a belief in Nigeria’s rich cultural wealth and its potential to be a major economic driver. The company cited optimistic projections for the country’s tourism sector.
“In 2025, Nigeria’s tourism sector is projected to contribute ₦11.2 trillion to GDP, up from about ₦10.9 trillion in 2024,” the company stated. “Domestic tourism expenditure is also expected to be around ₦6.1 trillion.”
The telecom operator emphasized that its investment goes beyond mere corporate social responsibility, calling culture and tourism “vital to our economy, our identity, and our future.”
Globacom reiterated its long-term resolve to elevate the Ofala Festival to global prominence, stating that its support “builds communities, jobs, local businesses, pride.”
Festival Highlights and Network Upgrades
Beyond its financial commitment, Globacom is introducing special initiatives for its customers this year. The company confirmed an “aggressive roll-out and upgrade of network infrastructure,” particularly to 4G-LTE in zones like the South East, to ensure enhanced voice and data services for all subscribers during the festival period.
It also spotlighted two new subscriber offerings, the Talkmasta plan and the Welcome Bonus, designed to deliver greater value.
The 2025 Ofala will be a multi-day cultural celebration, according to Mr. Nnaemeka Maduegbuna, Chairman of the Strategic Marketing and Communications Committee. The festivities will officially begin with the annual lecture series on October 7.
Other key highlights include:
1.The Oreze Art Exhibition, showcasing works by Nigerian and African artists.
2.The Ofala Youth Carnival on October 15.
3. A medical and wellbeing outreach.
4. A Royal Banquet in honour of Igwe Achebe on October 22.
Mr. Maduegbuna assured visitors that meticulous plans are in place to ensure the festival is colourful, secure, and enjoyable for all attendees.
