JOHANNESBURG, South  Africa – If there’s one thing all South Africans love, it’s a great meal shared with friends and family. I mean, do we ever really need an excuse to head outside and have some chesanyama? And with World Food Day set for 16 October, what better way to celebrate than by taking a journey to look at some of the more interesting cuisines from around the globe.

Let’s start off by heading to Northern India and checking out the Kashmiri wazwan meal. Well, ‘meal’ is an understatement. Normally reserved for special occasions, this is a feast of food and will be a challenge even for those with the healthiest of appetites. There are traditionally 36 courses with almost all of them meat-based. The meal includes favourites like roghan josh, kababs, and dhaniwal korma with a fair smattering of new ones to try out like gushtaba (a velvety textured meatball in white yoghurt gravy) and ruwangan chaman (cheese squares with tomato gravy). Definitely not something to try if you hate doing the dishes.

Closer to home in North Africa there is tagine stew. This might be familiar to a few of us who enjoy slow-cooked mutton or beef. What makes this one unique is the tagine, a conical clay pot that is incredibly adept at creating tender meat and veggies. Think of it as a slow-cooker but without the electricity.

But, of course, not everybody enjoys meat-based dishes. Countries around the world have some unique vegetarian dishes to consider too. Let’s go to Indonesia and check out the famous Gado Gado. Loosely translated as salad with peanut sauce, this meal is so much more than its description. It is a combination of potatoes, lontong cubes (compressed rice cake), tofu, hard-boiled egg, green beans, and carrots topped with the aforementioned peanut sauce. No wonder it is one of the most popular vegetarian dishes in Indonesia.

Or perhaps you have a sweet tooth. Check out the Hawaiian shaved ice for a head rush of note. This dessert is made by shaving a block of ice and flavouring it with syrup and other sweet ingredients. When you look at some of the flavours, your mouth will start watering. Think ice cream, condensed milk, coconut, even pineapple and you get the idea. With literally any flavour you can think of there is more than enough choice to experiment to your heart’s content.

This free App focuses on how to get the right amount of proteins, carbs, fats, etc. for balanced meals.
