GERMANY – Germany has offered to help Poland improve its air defences in the wake of a missile strike last week linked to the war in Ukraine.

German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht told the Rheinische Post newspaper that Berlin had “offered to support Poland in securing its airspace – with [German] Eurofighters and with Patriot air defence systems.”

She pointed out that Slovakia already had protection from these systems and that Germany wanted to extend its presence there “until the end of 2023, possibly even beyond.”

On Tuesday a missile hit the Polish village of Przewodów, just 6 kilometres from the border with Ukraine. Two civilians died.

Western powers including NATO currently believe that it was a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile used to defend against attacks by the Russian military.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky maintains however that it was a Russian missile, but admits that he does not know with 100% certainty what happened.

The missile incident showed that the West needed to improve its air defences, Lambrecht said, especially the countries that border Russia and Ukraine.
