BERLIN – German cyclist Phil Bauhaus believes that the sport has issues finding young talent due to past doping experience.

“Unfortunately, cycling still has a bad reputation in the media because of its doping past. So it seems reasonable that parents ask their children if they would rather play football,” Bauhaus told the Funke publishing house ahead of the start of the Tour of Germany on Wednesday.

He said that reporting on the topic is the job of journalists and that in Germany there’s more focus on it than elsewhere.

“Nevertheless, I don’t think you should be surprised if a 12-year-old child thinks twice about taking up cycling when the Tour de France broadcasts are very much about doping,” he said.

This leads to a stereotyped thinking, Bauhaus added. “Even if a German competes for the yellow jersey in the near future, everyone else will think: He’s doped anyway. That won’t change for the time being.”

One of the major doping cases in cycling involved US rider Lance Armstrong, who achieved international fame for winning the Tour de France a record seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005, but was stripped of his titles after an investigation into doping allegations.
