BERLIN – Opposition Leader in Germany, Friedrich Merz has been sworn in as German Chancellor.
Merz, who leads the CDU/CSU initially failed to secure the required vote after the first round of votes in the German Parliament.
He secured just 310 votes instead of the required 316 votes, a development that that sparked speculation about cracks in the coalition agreement he signed just hours before the votes.
It appears that his appeal to close ranks was successful after the initial failure.
In his pre-election speech, Merz said his government will immediately provide tax relief for citizens, invest in infrastructure such as railroads and help companies with energy prices.
He also promised to assist Ukraine with a hard line posture towards Russia
