Lagos State Government said on Friday that it is making arrangement with major intra-city transport operators in the state (National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, Lagos State Government Buses, LAGBUS and others operating in the state to commence an insurance policy that will make it mandatory for operators to insure passengers up to the sum of N2 million in case of death and N100, 000 as burial expenses.

Under the policy, a passenger, driver and conductor that suffers permanent disability in an accident will receive the sum of N1 million as compensation, while those that suffer injuries will be entitled to N200,000 as medical expenses, Commissioner for Transportation, Comrade Kayode Opeifa said at a press briefing in Lagos.

Opeifa said date for the commencement of the policy will be announced soon by Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola.

On the new driver’s license scheme, the commissioner said the state government through the Motor Vehicle Administration Authority (MVAA) in conjunction with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) processed 417, 653 applications from 21st June 2012 till date, adding that 313,270 applicants have gone through photo capture and biometrics. He said that 9,398 driver’s license are ready and yet to be collected while 104, 383 applicants are waiting for physical photo capture and biometrics.

The commissioner apologized for the seeming delay in processing of the document adding that the state government has held meetings with members of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority(LASTMA) and the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency(MVAA) not to arrest those who have proof that they have commenced processing of the new license whether or not the document has expired but alerted those who still drive with the old driver’s license that it will expire by June 30 and that they will not be covered by any injunction.
