DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned on Sunday that it would exact “punishment” against American forces following a U.S. military strike on Larak Island, a highly strategic Iranian outpost in the Persian Gulf.
The statement, issued by the IRGC’s Public Relations Department, reported that the strike caused casualties and fatalities among Iranian soldiers and civilians, though official counts were not immediately disclosed.
“In a blatant act of aggression, [the enemy] attacked Larak Island, resulting in the martyrdom and injury of several of our soldiers and fellow citizens,” the Guard’s command said in a formal declaration opening with religious invocation.
“This action will be met with a response from the children of Iran, and will result in the punishment of the aggressor.”
The IRGC attributed the strike to what it termed the “American-Zionist enemy,” alleging the operation was a desperate attempt to divert attention from domestic political crises and bolster waning credibility among regional allies.
Washington has not yet publicly confirmed details regarding the nature or targets of the operation, but military analysts note that Larak Island—situated in the narrowest neck of the Strait of Hormuz—holds critical strategic value.
Tehran maintains radar installations, anti-ship missile batteries, and naval staging points on the island, which directly overlooks a choke point through which nearly a fifth of the world’s petroleum passes.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have hovered near a flashpoint for months, fueled by maritime confrontations, regional proxy conflicts, and stagnant negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
Larak Island, located just off the coast of Bandar Abbas, has long served as a key garrison for the Guard’s naval forces.
During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, the island served as a vital oil terminal and safe harbor for Iranian tankers. In recent years, Tehran has heavily fortified the territory with advanced air defense systems and underground missile storage to project force across the Gulf.
Any direct U.S. action against Iranian sovereign territory or strategic islands represents a significant vertical escalation. In previous instances where high-ranking commanders or coastal assets were targeted, Tehran has responded with retaliatory missile strikes on military installations housing U.S. troops in the region, alongside stepped-up harassment of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Western security officials are closely monitoring Iranian naval movements in the Gulf, braced for potential asymmetrical counterattacks, sea-mine operations, or ballistic missile barrages aimed at U.S. bases in neighboring Arab states.
