LAGOS — Equinix, Inc., the global digital infrastructure company, has announced an ambitious $100 million investment plan aimed at transforming Africa’s digital landscape over the next two years.
The commitment kicks off with the opening of a high-performance data centre in Lagos, Nigeria, underscoring the continent’s growing strategic importance in the global technology ecosystem.
The initial phase, named LG3, represents a $22 million investment and is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2026.
This facility is set to provide vital new infrastructure, empowering local Nigerian businesses to scale and attracting international companies to the strategically positioned West African hub.
Nigeria as a Connectivity Hub
Nigeria, which boasts the second-largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa and a vibrant, tech-savvy population, is central to Equinix’s strategy.
Lagos, in particular, is recognised as the only African city in the Global Top 100 Startup Ecosystems, positioning it at the epicentre of the continent’s digital transformation.
”LG3 marks a significant milestone in Equinix’s long-term commitment to bridging Africa’s digital divide,” said Wole Abu, Managing Director for West Africa at Equinix.
He added that the facility will accelerate access to technologies such as cloud, AI, and the next wave of startups, fostering growth and laying the groundwork for an interconnected African economy.
The new LG3 data centre will incorporate Equinix Fabric, enabling businesses to securely connect their physical and virtual infrastructure to cloud service providers, partners, and other Equinix locations globally. This integration is expected to significantly enhance connectivity options for enterprises operating in and entering the region.
Global Expertise Meets Local Demand
Equinix’s expansion comes as Africa’s digital transformation accelerates, driven by a young population and rising internet access.
Aslıhan Güreşcier, Vice President, EMEA Growth & Emerging Markets at Equinix, commented, “Equinix is proud to invest in this dynamic region, supporting our customers’ growth with world-class data centres that power everything from banking and education to emergency services and commerce.”
The company first entered the African market in 2022 and has since expanded its presence to include key markets such as Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, in addition to opening its first data centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, last year. Equinix is leveraging Nigeria’s position as a crucial hub for global subsea cable connections, linking Africa with Europe and Asia.
For local partners, the investment is a crucial development. Olawale Owoeye, Managing Director at Cedarview, stated that the Lagos data centre will provide the “robust and resilient platform” their customers demand, ensuring they remain “at the forefront of businesses connecting Africa.”
With a global footprint of over 270 data centres, Equinix stated its operations in Nigeria will also prioritise sustainability, reflecting its commitment to reducing environmental impact and improving efficiency across all its sites.
