ABUJA, Nigeria – Suspended Governor of  Central Bank of Nigeria , Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has been remanded in prison custody by  a Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja.

Emefiele who  is facing an amended six-count charge by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  entered a  no guilty plea when he was re-arraigned before the court.

The trial judge, Justice Hamza Muazu, remanded Emefiele in prison custody at the Kuje Correctional Center pending the determination of a bail application.

Further proceedings in the case were adjourned until November 22.

Emefiele, represented by a team of lawyers led by Mr. Mathew Burkaa, SAN, appealed to the court for bail, assuring full cooperation during the trial.

His defense argued that the charges against him were bailable offenses. However, the prosecution, represented by Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, opposed the bail application, expressing concerns about Emefiele being a flight risk and his potential influence on witnesses due to his financial means.

Considering both arguments, Justice Muazu decided to review the exhibits attached to Emefiele’s bail application before making a ruling on bail.

This pause allows the court to carefully consider the case’s nuances before proceeding further.
