BENIN – Electric cars are so far not making headway on the German used car market, according to statistics from the Federal Motor Transport Authority.

At 1.25%, their share of new registrations in the first half of the year was even fractionally lower than in the same period last year. In raw numbers, this is 37,600 car registrations.

The fact that the share of electric cars on the second-hand market is much lower than on the new car market, where it reached almost 16% in the first half of the year, is mainly because pure electric cars have only been sold in significant volume for a few years.

For the used car market, it is more a question of available stock – and there, despite the increased numbers, electric cars still do not even account for 3%. In addition, vehicles are typically only resold after several years – so the stock arriving on the second-hand market is even smaller.

The proportion of electric cars on the second-hand market differs from region to region. It is highest in Schleswig-Holstein with 1.6% and Bavaria and Hamburg with 1.5% each. Lower Saxony with 1.4% and Baden-Württemberg and Hesse with 1.3% each are also above the German average.

Somewhat lower are Brandenburg, North Rhine Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, each with just under 1.2%. They are followed by Berlin and Saarland with around 1.0%. Thuringia comes in at 0.9%, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony at 0.8%, Bremen and Saxony-Anhalt at 0.7%.
