EFFURUN, Delta State – The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi by a senior officer in Effurun, Delta State, vowing that the perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, has sparked outrage and prompted the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to order the immediate transfer of the involved officers to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.
According to a statement released by the Force, preliminary investigations revealed that officers attached to the Effurun Area Command were acting on a tip-off from the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.
A transport union had intercepted Ogidi while he was allegedly attempting to “waybill” a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of live ammunition. However, the situation turned fatal during the arrest.
”While taking the suspect into custody, the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm unlawfully, resulting in the death of the suspect,” the statement read.
In a swift response to the extrajudicial killing, police authorities have ordered ASP Usman and his entire team to face the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC). Beyond internal dismissal proceedings, the officers are expected to face criminal prosecution.
The IGP extended his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, emphasizing that the Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on the abuse of authority and extrajudicial actions. He urged the public to remain calm while the investigation is concluded.
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has also weighed in on the tragedy, describing the killing as a flagrant violation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and international humanitarian standards.
In a separate briefing, the Commission commended the Delta State Commissioner of Police for his proactive steps in initiating the initial disciplinary measures, which included the suspension and interdiction of the officers involved.
As tensions simmer in the Effurun community, the PSC and the Force Headquarters have made a joint appeal for peace, assuring the public that the “blue wall of silence” will not protect the officers.
”The process of justice has been activated,” a PSC spokesperson stated. “We will ensure that this is not just another statistic, but a clear signal that the life of every Nigerian is sacrosanct.”
