ONITSHA, Anambra, Nigeria – A group, known as Ndi-Igbo United Forum (NUF) today staged a peaceful protest over what they described as suffocative, irresponsive, manipulative and unfriendly taskmasters to Ndigbo and the residents of South east region by the estimated billing activities of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

The National President of the group, Barrister Cletus Obinwanne, while addressing journalists shortly after the protest at Dr. Alex Ekwueme square Awka, said the hard posture of EEDC operated by fellow Igbos has equally ridiculed and unduly exposed them as Igboracist company in Nigeria.

He said more than 70 percent of consumers on prepaid meters in the entire south east are without light because EEDC denied them access to recharge while feasting and enjoying the continuous rape of consumers they forcefully quarantine to estimated billing.

According to him, EEDC new prepaid meter is a fraud as it is already calibrated to extort money from unsuspecting consumers.

“These actions by EEDC unrepentant manipulative mechanisation has further increased poverty and have been dealing unabated blows on the psych of innocent consumers in Igbo land, he added.

They group, during the protest gave out their demand as follow; EEDC should discontinue with estimated billing after the grace period officially granted by NERC this month for industrial consumers and end of March for residential consumers; EEDC should immediately discontinue with imposition of N39,000 for standalone meters and N78, 000 for double meters to obtain new meters.

They also demanded that those currently without meters should be given certified integrity meters at “No Cost” in line with Federal government directive through NERC; EEDC must respect Consumer Right of communication through letter before any disconnection as opposed to current gorilla disconnections that encourages extortions and exploitations.
