Ebola: Lagos Seals-up Three Houses in Mainland

August 19, 2014 – Lagos State Government today sealed up three houses in Lagos Mainland as part of effort to control the spread of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)in the state.

In a statement issued late Tuesday evening, Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello said the three houses are situated at nos., 42, 48 and 50 on Vincent Street, Lagos Island.

He said the houses were served abatement notices for discharging untreated human faeces directly into drainage channels leading to offensive odour capable of instigating outbreak of epidemic.

He said that all the tertiary drains in the area were found to be completely filthy and silted with solid/fecal waste during inspection.

He said that the enforcement Department of the Ministry of the Environment led by Dr. A. T. Afolabi sealed up the premises upon receipt of an order to abate nuisance adding that the state government recently organized train the trainers workshop during which environmental health officers and scientific officer across the state were trained to educate members of the public on preventive measures to reduce the spread of the Ebola disease.

He warned residents of the state to shun open urination and defecation as well as engage in best hygienic practices in order to reduce the spread.

Lagos residents are henceforth advised to shun acts that could further spread communicable diseases across the state as all hands must be on deck to ensure that the state of Lagos Environment is devoid of all environmental encumbrances.
