Muslim Right Concern (MURIC), a non governmental organisation has condemned on-going criticism of Senator Sani Ahmed, and his unapologetic preference for child marriage, stressing that honourable and dignifying child marriage is better than child prostitution, which he said is rampart across the federation.
A statement by director of the organisation, Professor Ishaq Akintola said age is not part of the condition that must be met before marriage could be solemnised in Islam. According to him, where the bride is a minor, Islam prescribes protective solemnisation of marriage to shield the bride from abuse.
“This means that the girl who is deemed to be of tender age is left untouched by the man until she attains puberty. Another major condition for the child is that the girl herself has the right to repudiate the marriage when she attains maturity if she does not like her spouse”, the professor said.
According to him, MURIC believes that honourable and dignifying child marriage is better than child prostitution, adding that the globalisation and promotion of homosexuality, same sex marriage and lesbianism as a direct challenge to divine order.
