ABUJA, Nigeria – The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has said that only the old Naira banknotes will be recirculated based on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement signed by Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, Mr. Edward Adamu and Osita Nwanisoba, the Director, Corporate Communications, the apex bank said it is not true that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reissuance of N500 and N1000 banknotes for recirculation as legal tender.

“For the avoidance of doubt,  the Central Bank of Nigeria reiterates that in line with the  directives of Mr. President, only N200  old notes are  to be reissued and to circulate concurrently  with the new notes”,  and urged members of the public to issue any fake news to the contrary.

The N200 old notes will remain legal tender until April 10, 2023.

The statement said the apex bank is working with law enforcement agencies to investigate, apprehend and prosecute the purveyors of the fake news.
