BY OUR MAN IN BERLIN
UNION BERLIN 4
Ilić 9, 41, Schäfer 53, Jeong 88
AUGSBURG 0
THE CAPITAL was treated to a masterclass in modern, high-octane football as a sizzling Union Berlin completely dismantled a clueless Augsburg 4-0 at a rocking Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
On a day fueled by the emotional farewell of interim boss Marie-Louise Eta, Berlin’s brightest stars shone like a constellation under the German sun, turning the final day of the Bundesliga season into an absolute party.
Freed from any lingering relegation worries, Union’s devastating frontline played with the handbrakes entirely off, putting on a clinic in transitions that left Augsburg chasing shadows from the very first whistle.
The undisputed star of the show was Serbian hitman Andrej Ilić. The forward terrorised the visitors’ backline from the off, needing just nine minutes to open his account.
Latching onto a high-pressing sequence, Ilić showed nerves of steel to slot past a stranded Finn Dahmen.
Augsburg simply had no answer for Berlin’s fluid attacking quartet. While young winger Livan Burcu darted in and out of challenges like a seasoned veteran, former West Brom and Sheffield United speedster Oliver Burke provided the sheer electric pace that turned the Augsburg defense inside out.
Just before the break, the Burke-Ilić connection paid massive dividends. Burke turned provider, setting up Ilić to bag his second of the afternoon in the 41st minute.
The clinical brace put the Iron Ones firmly in the driving seat before the half-time pies had even gone out.
Any hopes of an Augsburg fightback in the second half were brutally snuffed out by a midfield maestro.
In the 53rd minute, Hungarian star András Schäfer decided he wanted a piece of the spotlight. Capping off an incredibly industrious midfield performance alongside Aljoscha Kemlein, Schäfer unleashed a spectacular effort to make it 3-0, effectively ending the match as a contest.
With Portuguese rock Diogo Leite marshalling the backline with effortless composure, Union keeper Carl Klaus barely had a save to make all afternoon.
With time ticking away and the Berlin faithful chanting in full voice, the stars from the bench wanted their moment too.
In the 88th minute, a beautiful ball over the top from Josip Juranović set up a late flurry in the box. While young Dmytro Bogdanov’s initial shot was blocked, South Korean star Jeong Woo-yeong was quickest to react, sniffing out the rebound to fire home a comprehensive fourth.
It was the perfect exclamation point on a performance defined by tactical discipline and individual brilliance. For Marie-Louise Eta, it was a fairytale ending to her spell in charge. For the Union Berlin stars, it was a timely reminder of just how devastating they can be when they are fully aligned.
Star Man: Andrej Ilić (Union Berlin) – Two clinical goals and a powerhouse performance that set the tone for a capital routing.
