ABUJA, Nigeria – Algerian striker, who plays for Leicester, Riyad Mahrez has been named African Footballer of the Year 2016.
He was named at the GLO CAF award in Abuja, Nigeria. He defeated two others, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, is a French-born Gabonese professional footballer who plays for German club Borussia Dortmund.
He also plays for the national team of Gabon and Senegalese and Liverpool forward Sadio Mane to 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Only three players were nominated for the Glo CAF award.
Mahrez got 361 votes to beat Last year’s winner, Aubameyang, who scored 313 votes and Senegalese Sadio Mane with 186 votes.
Riyad Mahrez was earlier in the year crowned the BBC African Footballer of the Year 2016 after winning the premiership with Leicester.
Kelechi Ihenacho and Alex Iwobi emerged the most promising player and Young Player of the year
