KANO, Nigeria — Khalifa Aminu, a young Nigerian inventor, has unveiled a prototype for AI-powered smart glasses designed to grant visually impaired individuals greater independence, offering an alternative to traditional guide dogs and walking canes.
The wearable technology integrates artificial intelligence, spatial sensors, and real-time GPS tracking to help users safely navigate physical environments. Unlike standard commercial smart glasses focused on multimedia or augmented reality displays, Aminu’s device prioritizes obstacle detection, spatial awareness, and remote monitoring.
”This glass combines AI, sensors, and GPS to help the user detect things in front of them, avoid obstacles, and know their location,” Aminu explained in a presentation detailing the innovation.
A central feature of the device is its automated safety and tracking system. If a visually impaired user strays from a familiar path or becomes lost, the built-in GPS transmits precise geolocation data directly to a designated caregiver’s smartphone via automated WhatsApp messages or email alerts.
Aminu is actively expanding the prototype’s capabilities by integrating conversational AI and real-time voice feedback. The upcoming iteration aims to allow the glasses to audibly describe surrounding objects and interact directly with the wearer through voice commands, turning the device into an active audio guide.
Global & Regional Context: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 2.2 billion people globally live with a near or distance vision impairment, with a disproportionate number residing in low- and middle-income regions where access to modern assistive devices remains limited.
The Assistive Tech Gap: While high-tech navigation aids exist in Western markets, high costs and reliance on heavy digital infrastructure often limit their adoption in developing nations.
Local innovations like Aminu’s aim to bridge this accessibility gap using adaptable, low-latency mobile platforms like WhatsApp.
Next Steps: Aminu has shared video demonstrations showcasing the device’s object-avoidance capabilities and live GPS reporting, drawing international attention as he seeks further development support to scale production.
