LONDON, UK – A MET sergeant who sickeningly claimed a detainee “deserved to be beaten up” has been instantly dismissed from the force.
Sgt Lawrence Hume, attached to Met Detention, was sacked without notice after an accelerated misconduct hearing today (Friday, November 7) found him guilty of a serious breach of professional standards.
The shamed cop’s appalling comments were broadcast during a damning BBC Panorama investigation into the Metropolitan Police’s Charing Cross station on Wednesday, October 1.
The hearing ruled that Sgt Hume had breached standards for discreditable conduct and authority, respect and courtesy over his foul-mouthed remarks.
He will now be added to the Barred List by the College of Policing, banning him from ever re-joining the police or working for other related bodies.
Commander Simon Messenger, Professionalism, slammed Hume for his shocking lack of leadership.
He said: “As an officer in a leadership role Sgt Hume should have been setting an example to more junior colleagues. Instead he demonstrated a blatant disregard for the protection of the public and the professional standards expected of a serving police officer.”
The Commander added: “It is right he has been dismissed as we work tirelessly to raise standards and improve the culture across our organisation.”
SIXTH OFFICER SACKED
Sgt Hume is the sixth officer to be dismissed over the shocking behaviour exposed at Charing Cross on the Panorama show.
He was, however, cleared of two other allegations, including claims he supported and echoed comments made by already-dismissed Sgt Joseph McIlvenny about hiding the discussion of force from custody suite cameras.
Sgt Hume was also cleared of failing to challenge or report Sgt McIlvenny’s comments about using force on a detainee.
The sackings do not end here.
Accelerated misconduct hearings for PC Sean Park and former PC Brian Sharkey are due to be held later this month.
A hearing for the final officer, Sgt Steve Stamp, is also scheduled for a date yet to be confirmed.
An investigation into all the allegations at Charing Cross by the Independent Office for Police Conduct remains ongoing.
