HAMBURG – The aerospace group Airbus plans to hire 3,500 people in Germany this year. About 1,900 of them would be needed in civil aircraft construction, 1,100 in the military and space sector and about 500 at the helicopter plant, the group’s labour director Marco Wagner said on Wednesday.

Electricians, mechanics and cabin outfitters would be needed above all, but also IT specialists, cybersecurity experts and developers of fuel cells and hybrid propulsion systems, he said.

The company’s Hamburg site will account for about 1,300 external hires, Wagner said. There will be 500 each at the Donauwörth and Manching sites, 300 at Ottobrunn, 250 at Nordenham, 130 at Friedrichshafen/Immenstadt and 100 each at Bremen and Stade.

Around 20% of the new employees are to work on future projects. Wagner mentioned decarbonization, digital transformation, software development and cybertechnologies, among others.

One-third of all positions are to go to career starters, and one-third to women. Currently, just 20% of the workforce is female.

Airbus says it hired 13,000 new staff worldwide last year, half of them in commercial aircraft manufacturing, 30% in military and aerospace, and about 20% in helicopter manufacturing. “This was the steepest increase in the history of Airbus,” Wagner said.

Airbus currently employs about 134,000 people globally, 45,000 of them in Germany. At the largest site, in Hamburg, there are currently about 15,000 employees.
