KADUNA — Amnesty International Nigeria has raised a fresh alarm over the deteriorating security situation in Kaduna State, declaring that no part of the Millennium City neighborhood in Chikun Local Government Area is safe from banditry, daylight abductions, and violent attacks.
In a statement addressing the escalating crisis, the global human rights organization highlighted that bandits and armed kidnappers now operate across the area at all hours with utter impunity.
The pervasive insecurity has forced residents to live in perpetual fear, bracing for frequent invasions, while several families have reportedly abandoned their homes or suspended their children’s education to escape the violence.
Viral Video Highlights Growing Terror
The outrage surrounding the situation in Millennium City intensified following a viral video depicting the harrowing captivity of a local family—Ahmad Abubakar Zakka, his wife, and their infant daughter.
The family was abducted on October 5, 2026, when armed gunmen invaded Alrahus Estate within the neighborhood. In the video, the abductors are seen pointing AK-47 assault rifles directly at the family’s heads while threatening to shoot them.
The incident is part of a broader pattern of unchecked violent crimes in the area. Earlier, on August 19, gunmen invaded the nearby Kyauta area of Millennium City, abducting over a dozen residents in broad daylight.
In response to the absence of adequate official protection, some communities within Millennium City have resorted to forming local vigilante groups to defend their neighborhoods, while others continue to flee the area entirely.
Amnesty International warned that incessant killings, relentless abductions, and the continued failure of security authorities to end the attacks or bring perpetrators to justice pose a severe threat to the fundamental right to life in Kaduna State.
Chikun LGA Security Crisis: Chikun Local Government Area, which encompasses Millennium City, has long been one of the most heavily targeted administrative areas in Kaduna State by armed bandits.
Its proximity to expansive forest reserves spanning Kaduna, Niger, and Zamfara states provides armed groups with strategic cover and movement corridors.
Millennium City’s Strategic Importance: Millennium City was originally developed as a modern, rapidly expanding residential hub intended to relieve urban congestion from central Kaduna.
Its transformation into a high-risk zone underscores the geographic expansion of banditry from remote rural areas into planned suburban developments.
Broader Regional Impact: Over the past several years, Northwestern Nigeria has faced complex security challenges driven by organized crime, mass kidnappings for ransom, and attacks on vulnerable residential areas.
Despite periodic military offensives and security deployments, civil society organizations continue to call for sustained, proactive measures to safeguard residents and uphold human rights across affected communities.
