JEDDAH – The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has applauded the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly, on 18 November 2024, of resolution number A/79/L.9/Rev.1, titled “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation”.
The General Secretariat expressed its appreciation for the countries that sponsored and supported it, highlighting their commitment to international peace, security, and cooperation.
The resolution, which was adopted by consensus, emphasizes, among other issues, the shared goals and collaborative efforts of the OIC and the United Nations in addressing global challenges.
It reaffirms both organizations’ commitment to conflict prevention, peacekeeping, peace-building, post-conflict rehabilitation, and the promotion of a culture of peace.
This includes addressing issues that impact Muslim communities globally, with a particular focus on interfaith dialogue and cooperative initiatives. It underscores the desire for closer collaboration between the OIC and the UN in a range of fields.
The resolution particularly stresses the importance of the OIC-UN partnership in advancing the Middle East peace process and combating intolerance, discrimination based on religion or belief, and violent extremism. It also calls for further collaboration on issues such as counterterrorism and conflict mediation.
Taking this opportunity, the OIC reiterates its call on the international community to intensify its efforts to implement UN resolutions on the Palestinian issue, urging the recognition of Palestine’s right to establish an independent state with East Al-Quds as its capital.
In light of ongoing global conflicts, the OIC emphasizes the growing significance of the partnership between the UN and OIC, recognizing its strategic value in addressing both emerging and prolonged crises.
