LAGOS, Nigeria – What began as a day of polo and pageantry at Windsor’s Guards Polo Club unfolded into something far more meaningful. At Access Bank UK Polo Day 2025, the cheers echoed a deep mission: to open doors for children through education and opportunity.

The event, held in partnership with Fifth Chukker, has become recognised internationally for its social and philanthropic causes. Apart from its elegance and prestige, the event plays a vital role in supporting long-term initiatives focused on education, infrastructure, and improved opportunities for children in underserved communities across Africa.

    Decade of Purposeful Impact

For over 10 years, Access Bank has championed a development agenda that goes beyond short-term charity. Instead of merely donating funds, the Bank invests in initiatives that are designed to outlast the event and empower communities in meaningful ways. The proceeds from the annual Polo Day have funded the construction of 60 classrooms with additional 60 under construction in Northern part of Nigeria, notably, Kaduna State.

This long-term commitment underscores the Bank’s belief that education is the most powerful engine for social mobility and national development.

“We are not just building schools, we’re building the future,” said Roosevelt Ogbonna, Group Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank. “We want to ensure that every child, no matter their background, has the chance to dream, learn, and thrive.”

Through its continued partnerships with local authorities, NGOs, and development institutions, Access Bank has helped thousands of children transition from crumbling classrooms to dignified learning environments equipped with modern teaching tools and qualified educators.

    Beyond the Polo Field

At face value, the Access Bank UK Polo Day offers everything expected of a premium event: world-class polo matches, couture fashion, luxury hospitality, and distinguished guests from across business, diplomacy, and the arts. But beneath the surface lies a carefully curated platform for driving strategic philanthropy.

With  a clear vision, Access Bank is committed to transforming how corporate social responsibility is understood and delivered across Africa.

By aligning its philanthropic activities with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals),  the Bank ensures that every initiative is tracked, measured, and integrated into a broader development framework.

“This is about sustainability,” said Bolaji Agbede, Acting  Group Chief Executive Officer, Access Holdings. “If we can create an ecosystem that supports children from basic education through to economic empowerment, then we are not just helping individuals, we are shaping entire communities.”

    Real Stories, Real Change

Over the years, Access Bank’s Polo Day proceeds have gone toward building and maintaining the Access Bank Fifth Chukker-supported schools in Kaduna. These schools serve as a beacon of what is possible when vision meets execution. Classrooms have been refurbished, libraries stocked, solar-powered facilities introduced, and sports programmes developed, all contributing to a more holistic learning experience.

More importantly, the children who attend these schools are now beating the odds. With increased school attendance, reduced dropout rates, and improved academic performance, the outcomes are as compelling as they are heartwarming.

Take Fatima, for example, a 12-year-old student who, before the intervention, shared a class with 80 other pupils in a dilapidated room without desks or books. Today, she studies in a well-lit classroom with access to digital tools, clean water, and supportive teachers. Her dream? To become an engineer and help build better roads and bridges in her community.

Multiply Fatima’s story by thousands, and the ripple effect becomes clear. Education, when properly supported, becomes a powerful tool for breaking cycles of poverty and inequality.

    Partnerships That Scale Impact

One of the most unique aspects of Access Bank’s approach is its commitment to partnerships. The Bank understands that building pathways to brighter futures requires collaboration between corporations, governments, NGOs, and local communities.

Through its relationship with Fifth Chukker Polo, Access Bank has leveraged sport as a tool for social change. Polo may be a symbol of heritage and status, but in this context, it also becomes a symbol of shared responsibility. The Club has been instrumental in mobilising resources, awareness, and continued commitment from an international network of donors and influencers.

Other stakeholders, such as UNICEF and community-based organisations, are also part of the broader ecosystem that enables these projects to flourish. From co-funding infrastructure to teacher training and curriculum support, each partner adds a layer of sustainability to the collective vision.

    Model for Corporate Social Investment

In an era where many corporate social responsibility efforts are criticised for being performative or short-lived, Access Bank’s strategy stands apart. It is data-driven, community-informed, and impact-oriented. There is a clear emphasis on sustainability: focusing on long-term value, not one-off handouts; scalability: designing projects that can grow and evolve across multiple regions; and accountability: measuring results through clear KPIs, feedback loops, and third-party evaluations

By embedding social investment into its brand DNA, Access Bank has set a new standard for how financial institutions can lead beyond profits.

    The Road Ahead

The smiles on the field at Windsor were genuine. But what mattered most were the unseen smiles,  of children miles away who will one day look back and say: “Someone believed in me.”

Access Bank UK Polo Day 2025 served as a powerful reminder that business success and social impact are not mutually exclusive. Through intentional giving, strategic partnerships, and a relentless focus on education, the Bank is not just making promises, it is delivering progress.

The guests at the Access Bank UK Polo Day left with memories and  a renewed understanding that every action counts, and that true legacy lies in the lives we touch.

And for the children whose futures are being rewritten, that legacy has only just begun.
