NYSC flags off 2020 free medical mission for rural dwellers in Anambra

ONITSHA, Anambra, Nigeria – Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Anambra state chapter have treated over 2, 300 people at the flagged of its 2020 free medical outreach for rural dwellers in the state.
Flagging off the programme titled ” Anambra state Health Initiative for Rural dwellers at the Community Secondary School Omuoba-Anam in Anambra East Local Government Area on Thursday, the State NYSC coordinator, Mr Kehinde Aremu said that the Initiative was designed to deliver healthcare services to the poor and vulnerables in the state.
The free medical outreach attracted over 2,300 local people, majorly farmers and fishermen. According to Aremu, the programme was part of the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme across the country to help the poor and vulnerables to access free medical treatment at no cost.
He said, the scheme was mobilising corps members to provide healthcare services to their host communities, especially the poor and vulnerables. According to him, the medical intervention programme would go across the 21 local government areas of the state, and people would be diagnosised for illness and be treated.
Aremu further said that the scheme has also impacted positively on the state through Community Development Services (SDS), particularly in the area of primary healthcare Services delivery.
He also appealed to the benefiting communities to cooperate with the Corps members by availing themselves for the free medical services.
Commending the NYSC, the Transaction Committee Chairman, of Anambra East Council Area, Hon. Obi Nweke thanked the scheme for the good gesture which he said would reduce the suffering rural dwellers undergo to access healthcare services.
Our correspondent gathered that various diseases such as malaria, diabetes, cholera and typhoid and eye problems were diagnosed and treated during the outreach.
The programme attracted personalities among include,the Traditional Ruler of Omuoba-Anam, Igwe Judge Aakwenonu and the President General of the community, Chief Morba Omenwa Victor who described the NYSC medical outreach as a welcome development and called on wealthy individuals in the state, government and private organisations to emulate the gesture.
