LAGOS, Nigeria – Popular Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Mr. Charles Awurum has obviously given up on the judiciary as the last hope of the common man. Charles Awurum who was speaking in relation to the judgment of the Supreme Court which replaced Hon. Emeka Ihedioha with Senator Hope Uzodinma as Governor of Imo State and consequent defections in Imo House of Assembly said democracy is in danger.
Already, Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) has returned to the Supreme Court to seek judicial review of the case. But speaking on the development, Charles Awurum, the Nollywood star said our democracy is seriously going down hill.
According to Charles Awurum, political parties now go to war, instead of going through the electoral process and that the Judiciary has become the determinant factor, not the voters. “The Legislative and Judiciary arms of government are now week children of the Executive”, he said.
Charles Awurum said the powers of these two arms have been watered down by fear of the almighty monstrous Executive. “One of the most dangerous aspects, which is really what I want to talk about is the self-centred, greedy and uncaring nature of those that represent the people in the national and state Assembly”, he noted, adding that the result is that there is no longer a strong opposition again.
“Once there is a change of Government, those selfish, self-centered and those who must remain in government will cross carpet. Look at what happened in Imo state, just a day or two after the change of government 9 House of Assembly members crossed over to APC, out of fear of loosing their positions”, the Nollywood star said.
“Charlesndawurum Our democracy is seriously heading the rock. Politics in Nigeria is now a do or die affair. Political parties now go to war, instead of going through the electoral process, the Judiciary is now the determinant factor, not the voters. The Legislative and Judiciary arms of government are now week children of the Executive.
“Their powers have been watered down by fear of the almighty monstrous Executive. One of the most dangerous aspects, which is really what I want to talk about is the self-centred, greedy and uncaring nature of those that represent the people in the national and state Assembly.
“This has reduce drastically the checks and balances that used to be in three arms of government. Now in political parties, no strong opposition again. Once there is a change of Government, those selfish, self-centered and those who must remain in government will cross carpet. Look at what happened in Imo state, just a day or two after the change of government 9 House of Assembly members crossed over to APC, out of fear of loosing their positions.
“This makes the executive (Governor) Lord and personal savior. No opposition. Making the opposition party very weak, this can build up a tyrannic government. Which would cause the people to suffer undue hardship. A good government looses support from the house, because of selfishness of members of the same party. Very few legislators sit and fight back injustice done to the party. This is a disaster done, not only to the party, the state, but also to the nation in general.
“Those we vote to represent us are just tolls used by others to achieve their selfish goals. I might not be a prophet, but our country is indeed heading to a dangerous end if nothing is done fast.
“They say in politics no permanent friend, no permanent enemies. Let me tell you, in Nigeria’s politics no friends at all. Those who laugh with you when you are in power are your worst enemies.
:This Judicial mistake done to Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha must be corrected immediately or Nigeria’s Judiciary will be messed up. And no hope for the common man in Nigeria. An injustice done to one, is an injustice done to many. Let’s put hands together to make Nigeria remain one”, Charles Awurum said.
