Terrified families watched in horror as a Nigerian migrant who has not been named allegedly butchered a pet cat and tried to roast it on a makeshift grill—right in the middle of a children’s playground.
The stomach-turning scene unfolded in a quiet park in northern Italy, where witnesses claim the man set up a crude barbecue just yards from where youngsters play. Shocked onlookers dialled 999 after spotting the 30-year-old Nigerian national allegedly preparing the feline for a gruesome alfresco feast.
Local residents described the moment they realised what was sizzling on the grill.
”It was like something out of a nightmare,” said one witness, who asked not to be named.
“You expect to see kids on the swings, not someone skinning a cat for lunch. People were shouting and screaming for him to stop, but he just carried on.”
Police rushed to the scene and found the man huddled over the makeshift fire. Officers confirmed the animal was already dead and was being prepared for consumption.
Arrest and Charges
Carabinieri officers moved in quickly to dismantle the grim setup. The man, whose identity has not been released but who is confirmed to be a Nigerian migrant, was arrested on the spot.
He has been hit with charges including:
Animal Cruelty: Under Italian law, killing an animal without necessity is a serious criminal offence.
Public Disturbance: Causing distress to families in a designated recreation area.
”This was a barbaric act in a place meant for joy and safety,” said a local police spokesperson. “The suspect was taken into custody without resistance, but the investigation into his legal status in the country is ongoing.”
This grisly incident has reignited the fierce debate over migration and integration in Italy’s northern regions.
Legal Stakes: Italy has some of the strictest animal welfare laws in Europe. If convicted of animal cruelty, the man could face up to two years behind bars.
Local Anger: Right-wing politicians have wasted no time pointing to the incident as a “symbol” of a breakdown in social order, while animal rights groups have called for the “maximum penalty possible” to be handed down.
The playground has since been cleaned, but local parents say they won’t be bringing their children back any time soon. For now, a community remains in shock after a sunny afternoon turned into a scene of absolute carnage.
Do you think local authorities are doing enough to manage public safety in these areas?
