ERLING HAALAND was the man of the hour once again as Manchester City roared back into the thick of the title race with a pulsating 2-1 victory over league leaders Arsenal.
In a clash that lived up to every ounce of its pre-match hype, it was the Norwegian goal-machine who delivered the knockout blow, leaving Mikel Arteta’s men looking over their shoulders with just a three-point cushion and City clutching a crucial game in hand.
The Etihad was a cauldron of noise from the first whistle, and it took just 15 minutes for the roof to nearly come off. New star Rayan Cherki proved exactly why Pep Guardiola fought so hard for his signature, dancing past Gabriel and slotting a low drive home to give City the lead.
But the Gunners didn’t stay down for long. Just two minutes later, Kai Havertz—the man for the big occasion—capitalized on a rare lapse in concentration from Gianluigi Donnarumma. The German forward charged down the keeper’s attempted clearance, the ball ricocheting off him and into the net to level the scores and silence the home faithful.
The second half was a tactical chess match, with Martin Ødegaard pulling the strings for Arsenal and Bernardo Silva tirelessly patrolling the midfield for the Blues. Arsenal came inches from taking the lead when Eberechi Eze rattled the inside of the post, but fate had other plans.
In the 65th minute, the moment every City fan had been waiting for arrived. Youngster Nico O’Reilly turned provider, finding Haaland inside the six-yard box.
With the predatory instinct that has become his trademark, Haaland pounced to sweep home his 34th goal of an incredible campaign.
Arsenal threw everything at the City goal in the closing stages. Gabriel hit the post and Havertz sent a header agonisingly over the bar in stoppage time, but the champions held firm.
As the final whistle blew, the Etihad erupted. The gap at the top has shrunk, the momentum has shifted, and the Premier League trophy is suddenly looking very much like it might be staying in Manchester for another year.
