BRUSSELS has told Donald Trump to “get stuffed” after the US President threatened to slap massive tariffs on any nation blocking his plan to takeover Greenland.
In a defiant late-night showdown, European bigwigs vowed to stand “shoulder to shoulder” with Denmark as the row over the icy territory turned into a full-blown global trade war.
The billionaire President sparked fury this weekend by suggesting he would punish America’s oldest allies with crippling import taxes unless they cleared the way for the Stars and Stripes to fly over the Arctic island.
But in a stinging joint statement released tonight, EU Council President António Costa and Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen told the White House to back off.
‘DANGEROUS SPIRAL
They warned that Trump’s tariff threats would trigger a “dangerous downward spiral” and destroy the “special relationship” across the pond.
The EU duo fumed: “Territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law. Europe will remain united, coordinated, and committed to upholding its sovereignty.”
The spat exploded after the US took umbrage at a Danish military exercise in the region.
Trump’s team viewed the drills as a snub to his “Offer of the Century” to buy the island—but the EU insists the exercises were a standard NATO move that “posed no threat to anyone.”
Expressing “full solidarity” with the Danes, the EU statement added: “Tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations. Dialogue remains essential.”
The standoff has left diplomats scrambling to prevent a repeat of the 2019 chaos when Trump first floated the idea of buying Greenland, famously calling the Danish Prime Minister’s refusal “nasty.”
Now back in the Oval Office, the President appears ready to use his favourite weapon—trade taxes—to get his way.
But Brussels is digging in its heels, insisting that Greenland isn’t for sale at any price.
A source said: “Trump thinks everything has a price tag. He’s about to find out that European sovereignty isn’t on the bargain rail.”
