BARCELONA, SPAIN – The new-look RCDE Stadium was bouncing last night as RCD Espanyol secured a crucial 2-1 victory over European hopefuls Sevilla, with the home ground proving to be the real 12th man for Los Pericos.
The stunning modern stadium, home to Espanyol in the Barcelona suburb of Cornellà de Llobregat, erupted early in the second half when veteran forward Pere Milla put the hosts ahead just three minutes after the restart.
Milla, who has been in red-hot form, capitalised on some slack Sevilla marking to head home in the 48th minute, sending the massive crowd of over 40,000 into a frenzy.
The game was settled in spectacular style in the 84th minute by substitute Roberto Fernandez, who spotted the Sevilla keeper off his line and unleashed a sensational 25-yard curling strike that flew into the back of the net.
It was a goal worthy of any stage, especially the slick turf of the RCDE Stadium, sealing the three points.
Sevilla mounted a late charge, grabbing a consolation goal just two minutes later through defender Marcao, but the noise and passion inside the stadium ensured the visitors could not find a late equaliser.
The result is a huge lift for Espanyol, who are using their magnificent home ground as a fortress this season to fire themselves right into the thick of the La Liga European qualification race.
The atmosphere under the floodlights at the RCDE Stadium was truly electric, providing the perfect backdrop for a famous win.
