ANFIELD turned from a fortress into a house of horrors last night as defending champions Liverpool were absolutely demolished 3-0 by a rampant Nottingham Forest side in one of the Premier League’s biggest shocks of the season.
The famous Kop stood silent, stunned into disbelief as Steve Cooper’s Forest men swaggered off the hallowed Anfield turf having inflicted a three-goal hammering on the sorry Reds. It was a result that will send shockwaves through Merseyside and leave boss Arne Slot clinging to his job after a truly shambolic performance on home soil.
Forget the famous European nights, this was a night of utter humiliation at the heart of the L4 postcode.
The damage started midway through the first half. The mighty Reds were buzzing around their own box like confused flies until Brazilian defender Murilo popped up like an angry ghost to smash the ball home in the 33rd minute. Murilo, a defender!
New gaffer Slot must have hoped his half-time rocket would jolt his lifeless stars back to life, but within a minute of the restart, disaster struck again!
Just 46 minutes on the clock and the Reds’ defence parted like the Red Sea for Savona to fire home, sending the travelling Forest fans into delirium and leaving a thousand Scouse faces buried in their hands.
The final, fatal blow came in the 78th minute. Winger Gibbs-White danced through the statuesque backline and finished coolly to complete a spectacular, almost unbelievable 3-0 victory for the Tricky Trees.
The final whistle was greeted by a chorus of boos at Anfield, with every Liverpool player knowing they had let their massive fanbase down at their spiritual home.
Forest, battling relegation only days ago, have not only won but have humiliated the champions on the very ground where they are supposed to be unbeatable.
The question tonight isn’t where Liverpool’s title defence has gone, but how on earth they can recover from such a crushing, unforgivable defeat at Anfield.
