NEW YORK – Secretary General of the United Nation, Antonio Guterres has said that over 70 journalists were killed this year alone.
The UN scribe who was speaking on International Day to end impunity against journalists said the journalists were killed for simply fulfilling their role in society.
According to him, there is the need to end the common culture of impunity and enable journalists to do their essential work.
He also said that there is a surge in disinformation, online bullying & hate speech – particularly against women journalists, which he said is impeding the work of the media.
He said government must do more to protect journalists and stand up for truth, justice and human rights.
“More than 70 journalists have been killed this year for simply fulfilling their vital role in society. Most of these crimes go unsolved. We must end the common culture of impunity and enable journalists to do their essential work”, he said.
