BERLIN – Germans showed how uncomfortable they have been with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whose government collapsed in November 2024 at the weekend parliamentary election when his party failed woefully as anticipated in online polls, collapsing irredeemably to the third position.
The fast rising Christian Democratic Union, CDU clinched the top spot, with its leader, Friedrich Merz set to take over as the next German Chancellor.
In the polls at the weekend, the CDU secured 28.6 percent in the election, followed by AfD with 20.8 percent and Olaf Scholz SDP trailing in the third position with 16.4 percent. The Greens got 11.6 percent, while the far left got only 8.8 percent of total votes.
Speaking after the electon, Merz said, “for three years of Russian war of aggression against the #Ukraine . Three years of war in Europe. For three years, we have been accompanied by the terrible images of destruction and war crimes.
“Europe remains firmly on the side of Ukraine. Now more than ever, we must put Ukraine in a position of strength. For a just peace, the attacked country must be part of peace negotiations, he said, adding “We live in a time of great challenges and crises.
“ I was very pleased to receive congratulations from Germany and abroad. Together with our allies, Germany will make a contribution to freedom and security in the world”, he said.
Also speaking, the German Chancellor, Olaf Sholz said “for three years now, Ukrainian men and women have been courageously and heroically defending themselves from Russian aggression. Day after day. Week after week. No one desires peace more than they do. We continue to stand by their side – for a just and lasting peace”, he said.
