LEIPZIG – Rival fans clashed after an eastern German fourth division football match between Carl Zeiss Jena and Chemie Leipzig which left 79 people injured, according to local police.
Police said late Saturday that the fighting started when both camps violently opened buffer gates behind a stand after Leipzig fans had thrown pyrotechnics towards the Jena fans.
Police said that it used batons and irritant gas to end “a brief and uncontrolled confrontation.”
It said that 10 officers and five stewards were injured along with 64 fans from both camps, and that 40 criminal and misdemeanour charges were filed.
Police also said that it also used batons and irritant gas to disperse a group of 350 home fans who had marched through the city before the match Jena won 5-0.
