MOSCOW – The Kremlin has warned Ukraine that the use of Western non-nuclear missiles by Ukrainian forces against Russia under the new doctrine signed into law by President Vladimir Putin could trigger a nuclear response from Russia.
The Kremlin Spokesman, Dmitry Peskov made the remarks following the use of US-made ATACMS ballistic missiles for the first time to hit deep into Russia.
The strike according to the Russian news agency was conducted against a weapons storage facility in Russia’s Bryansk region, with a distance of over 100km across the border.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said six ATACMS missiles were fired, adding that five of them were intercepted by the ministry.
Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov has allayed fears about the new posture of Russia on use of nuclear arsenal on NATO and their allies, stressing that the updated Russian nuclear doctrine does not add anything that would differ from the content of similar American documents.
He said Russia is convinced that nuclear weapons are, first and foremost, a means of deterring and preventing a nuclear war, he added.
