BERLIN – RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose sees the heavy workload on players as an increasingly vexing problem and a reason for injuries at top clubs.
“I don’t even want to think about how a club that is also playing in the Club World Cup next summer will cope. The burden is frankly more than borderline,” Rose told reporters after Saturday’s 0-0 home Bundesliga draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach. It was the third match in a row without a win for the Red Bulls.
Rose had to replace four regular first-team players and sees a similar problem at other clubs.
“For me, there are clear links between injuries at Real Madrid, Manchester City, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and many other clubs,” said the 48-year-old.
“The frequency of games for international players – it’s too much.”
Real Madrid and Manchester City have lost games unexpectedly of late and both have a slew of injuries, while Dortmund had to field two midfielders in defence in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Mainz.
Players now head off to their national teams for two Nations League games and Rose thinks clubs without international players have a big advantage.
They can train properly while “we have to deal with these obstacles,” added the coach, who said he has not been able to do training sessions on switching the play or pressing since the start of the season.
