It is not my decision that I am supposed to leave Bremen. The best thing for me would be a return to the first team tomorrow and to play for Werder Bremen

LEVERKUSEN – Naby Keita has not given up hope that he can return into Werder Bremen’s team although the Bundesliga club aims to sell him.

Keita, 29, arrived in 2023 from Liverpool but has rarely played. He nursed injuries and was then suspended in April when he refused to join the squad for a match at Bayer Leverkusen.

Keita said he has apologised to the team for the incident.

At the moment he is only allowed to train with Bremen’s under-23 side but Keita told Sunday’s Bild paper he wants to get back into the first team rather than being sold.

“It is not my decision that I am supposed to leave Bremen. The best thing for me would be a return to the first team tomorrow and to play for Werder Bremen,” Keita said.

A summer transfer to Turkish Süper Lig side Hatayspor did not happen, with Keita saying it “wouldn’t have been challenging from a sporting point of view” because Hatayspor are at the bottom of the table.

“I don’t want to go somewhere only to leave Bremen, but only to a club that can push forward my career,” Keita said.
