WEMBLEY – Christian Wück started his term as Germany women’s national team coach with a 4-3 win against England in a friendly match at Wembley on Friday.
Giulia Gwinn scored a brace and Klara Bühl added a third to give Germany the lead before the half-hour mark, but England answered back with two goals from Georgia Stanway to make it 3-2 before half-time.
Sara Däbritz was on target for Germany after the break and Lucy Bronze’s effort came too late for England to equalize.
“The players won this game themselves, it would be wrong to make everything about the new coach,” Wück told broadcasters ARD.
The meeting was a rematch of the Euro 2022 final Germany lost 2-1 in extra time against the hosts at the same Wembley stadium.
Germany now face Australia on Monday in a game that will mark the farewell of long-serving captain Alexander Popp, who will retire from the national team.
Wück signed a contract until the end of 2026 and replaced interim coach Horst Hrubesch, who led the team to a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics this summer.
