APOLDA – A 90-year-old man who found himself locked in after an event in a church in the central German town of Apolda managed to sound the alarm by activating the church bells in the early hours, police said on Sunday.
The man had earlier been reported missing after failing to return to the home for the elderly where he lives. A police search failed to locate him.
The ringing of the church bells at the unusual hour of 3:15 am (0115 GMT) raised the suspicions of the duty officer in the local police station, who despatched officers to investigate.
On arrival they heard the 90-year-old calling out from inside the church and called the priest, who unlocked the doors.
The man told the officers he had searched the church for hours after being locked in before finding the controls for the bells.
