LOS ANGELES- Global condemnation by students against the genocidal war in Gaza continued in the United States on Thursday, with sit-in camps at the University of California, Los Angeles.
While the students sit in camps calling for an end to genocide and for the university to stop using endowment funds to support entities churning out weapons for slaughtering innocent Palestinians on a daily basis, students and children in the centre of the war in Gaza held a solidarity rally thanking students worldwide who are echoing their voices far and wide for a free Palestinian State.
The protest in UCLA was however very peaceful, yet the school authorities called in the police, who moved in, firing flash bangs with deafening noise and succeeded in removing the barriers put in place by the students. Over 200 students were arrested with their hands to the back held in place with zip bands.
Some of the students however sustained injuries in the process of storming the camp with explosives and guns.
Speaking on the incident, UCLA authority declared the sit-in camps as illegal.
In a statement, the authority said Police have ordered an evacuation of Dickson Plaza due to an unlawful assembly.
“DO NOT re-enter the area of Dickson Plaza & follow the direction of public safety personnel. UCLA has modified campus operations”, adding that the University of California Los Angeles has declared the encampment and all unauthorised tents and structures in Dickson Plaza to be unlawful.
“The University requires that everyone must leave the encampment and adjacent areas, as well as all unauthorised structures and tents immediately, until further notice. If you fail to leave and remain present in the encampment or unauthorised tents or structures in Dickson Plaza, regardless of your purpose for remaining, you will be in violation of the law and those who choose to remain could face sanctions.
“For students, those sanctions could include disciplinary measures such as interim suspension that, after proper due process through the student conduct process, could lead to dismissal.
“Faculty disciplinary actions would be handled through Senate judiciary committees and Academic Affairs and Personnel, and staff employee disciplinary actions would be handled through Human Resources. Please leave the area immediately”, the university said.
