Gaza: How friendly fire killed 2 Israeli soldiers

GAZA – Details have emerged on how friendly fire killed two soldiers in the Israeli Defence Forces,IDF deployed to Gaza for the war against Hamas.

The two officers, Master Sgt Ido Aviv (28) of 9232 Battalion, Yiftah Brigades and Kalkidan Meharim (37) of the 223 Battalion, Carmeli BrigadesHamas were hit from shell by a tank that opened fire out designated boundary according to military probe.

The probe found that the incident began as an IDF tank was hit by a roadside bomb (F16’s unexploded bomb near the Turkish Hospital in the Netzarim Corridor, shortly after, mortars and anti-tank missiles were launched toward troops in the corridor area.

“Amid an exchange of fire with the Hamas operatives, a tank of the Yiftah Brigade left an encampment and shelled a building in the area.

“The building had been outside of the tank force’s designated boundaries, according to the probe.

“Several troops, including Aviv and Meharim, were in the building when it was hit”, the investigation revealed.

Meanwhile, the IDF said troops are continuing activities to thwart Hamas activities in central Gaza.

“The troops struck numerous targets throughout the Gaza Strip over the past day

“IAF fighter jets struck and destroyed a number of targets belonging to the Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorist organizations, including weapon storage facilities, military structures, launch sites, and mortar launchers used to fire toward IDF troops.

“In addition, IAF fighter jets, in coordination with ground troops, struck several terrorists that directed launches toward IDF troops in the Gaza Strip.

“Furthermore, IDF troops identified a terrorist cell that approached IDF troops in the central Gaza Strip. An IAF aircraft swiftly struck and eliminated the terrorist cell. A short while afterward, IDF troops identified an additional terrorist cell that were laying explosives. The terrorist cell, along with the explosives, were struck by an IAF aircraft.

“During additional activity, IDF troops conducted searches in the area during which they found weapons stockpiles, documents, and military equipment in one of the structures” Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in the statement.
