LAGOS, Nigeria – The historical film Funmilayo Ransom Kuti has raked in over N32 million few weeks after it kicked off tours of cinemas in Nigeria.
The figure 32 million war recorded as at May 20, 2024 and should have doubled by now. Producer, Bolanle Austen Peters said the film will also tour cinemas given its international appeal.
The film which explored the historic exploits of Funmilayo and her struggle for the rights of Egba market women and the overthrow of the Oba featured reputable actors like Joke Silva, Jide Kosoko, Keppy Ekpeyong, Adebayo Salami, with the introduction of Yeni Kuti, the most prominent daughter of the late afrobeat king, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Speaking during one of the premiers, Bolanle Austen Peters called on Nigerians to keep up with their patronage through the cinemas, adding that the feat wouldn’t be possible without their support.
She said it is only with such support with more historical films be put on the table.
“This is a wonderment”, she wrote on the social media and that she is grateful for the love and support from everyone.
“It is indeed a win for all of us Nigerians, because people actually said “nobody wants to watch history” but we delivered history in an excellent package and we rode on the wings of all our friends, actors, fans, influencers, awards, family that were rooting for us”, she said.
She explained that despite so many “BUTS” no festive period, no holiday, no this, no that many foreign films, God saw us through.
“Let’s keep watching, laughing and being inspired by the legacy of Funmilayo Ransome Kuti”, she wrote.
