AGUNGI, Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria  – It is barely May 01, 2024, very early into the rainy season with the usual heavy rains yet to set in yet there is water, and water everywhere in Agungi, one of the most popular area in the Lekki axis where you find the high and mighty in the highbrow Lekki.

The whole stretch of the road almost 100 metres from the  main Mosque deep inside Agungi is covered with murky water so dirty that only desperate residents in the axis dare to walk on the smelly green water.

Ironically, this road connects the popular Ajiran community, the prominent and most priced estates in the axis including Osapa. The roll call include Chevron Estate, Victoria Crest Apartments, Pinnock Beach Estate, Valley Dream Estate,  Victory Park Estate, Cadogan,  The Address Homes and Femi Okunnu Estate, to name just a few.

The major problem, according to residents  who would rather not speak on camera, is the fact that  buildings in the axis  were erected on wetlands reclaimed from streams. Besides, most of the drainage channels have sunk below sea level, while some able to withstand the test of time remain blocked to the brim with silts.

Our investigations revealed that though there are primary drainages provided in the north, west and south of the enclave, they were never connected with secondary channels which should recieve the massive pool of water from the local drainage channels and empty into the primary channel built by government between Dr. Kennedy Okonkwo Way and Chief Yomi Idowu Way. Besides commuters, businesses in the axis are also suffering.

One of those doing business in the area told our reporter that the perennial flood impacts negatively on sales.  We are informed that the road is completely abandoned during the heavy rains since neither saloon cars, motorcycles and jeeps are able to pass through  the road. They say only heavy trucks dare to pass through the terrain each time there is heavy rain, while residents remain indoors until the large body of water subsides.

They are calling on the Babajide Sanwo-Olu led Lagos State Government to intervene through the Ministry of Environment to save them from this perennial problem and development mess called Agungi in Lekki, Lagos.
